Sac-Comic Con: Spring 2019 (First Time At Cal Expo)

I love Sac-Con! It's a quick, fun little con that doesn't require me to make a ton of planning. I don't need to get a hotel room for it, and sionce it's on Sunday (The Lord's Day) I usually don't have to take any time off of work for it.

Since it's only day and usually pretty small, it's not a huge money maker for me, but since I don't take any time off of work, i'm not stressing over how much money I make, and since the tables are super cheap, it doesn't take much to make my table and gas money back. No fuss! no muss!

This year was a little different though, because of a big venue change. The Sacramento Convention Center is apparently about to undergo some massive renovations, so this year, we held Sac-Con at the Cal Expo. Now, I am super wary of venue changes, I lost one of my most beloved cons to a venue change (WonderCon, please come back to the Bay Area, we miss you). The other thing is that venue changes CAN very often lead to lowered attendance, because people dunno where the new place is, or it's too far away for them, or whatever. I was pleasantly surprised, however, to find that this con was actually VERY well attended. The last Sac-Con was sparse, in comparison, we actually got a really nice crowd.

I will say, it was sort of awkward, because the artist alley was separated from the main convention. Usually the dealers and the artists share a space, but I guess the nature of the building they rented kind of prevented that. It was two, long rooms connected in a center by a short hallway, like a big H. So the main room, the room where the entrance was, was all dedicated to the dealers. Everything else, the artists, the autographs and the cosplay contest all got the second room. Slightly inconvenient, sure, but doing this way worked out in the long run, because both rooms had plenty of space to spare, so the aisles between tables were allowed to be nice and roomy for the foot traffic.

All in all, my experience was pretty positive, but I have to wonder what they're gonna do when Sac-Anime happens. Sac Anime is a multi day convention, and according my my friend Danielle, there are no hotels near by, so uh... that raises a problem.
As of now, the Sac-Anime site still lists the venue as the Sacramento Convention Center. The actual closure of the center isn't slated until July of this year (Sac-Anime is in June), so I guess this venue change this time was just  dry run of what they're planning in the long run. All I can say is, I hope that THIS venue is just what they have in mind for Sac-Con and have something better in mind for Sac-Anime.

One idea that both Danielle and I think is a good one is temporarily relocating Sac-Anime back to the Radison Hotel (now the Woodlake Hotel). This is the venue Sac-Anime was at the first time I ever went, and while I will admit that it is a smaller venue (smaller compared to the Sacramento Convention Center, I mean, not small in general.) it's also a goddamn beautiful venue!

It's mostly outdoors, where the hotel balconies form a ring around a massive grass field with a concrete patio in the center with a big swimming pool, and hot tub combo. The convention center proper is a series of long buildings that form the front of the ring of hotels. It has a lot of big glass panels which let in a lot of natural light and plenty of little lounge areas with chairs and couches. I would be SO pleased to come back to that venue after 7 years, but I guess we'll see. Sac-Anime has grown significantly since then, and even in 2012, it was starting to outgrow the Radison's britches. We'll see, though.

Wherever we wind up, we're gonna be there until November 2020, so... yeah!

So what's next for TransCat?
Well, ClexaCon is in less than a month! 25 days, in fact! Jeez, I better start plotting my course to Las Vegas. I've never been on a road trip that long before, it's gonna be an 8 hour drive! Knowing traffic, it'll prolly be longer. Ye gods. Wish me luck!

In other news! I've been drawing some comics for Geeky Steven recently! Go like that page and you'll get a new comic from me each week! Plus some other quality memes from one of the funniest blokes I know.

I also received some complains about last month's Patreon comic. I guess in my quest to make my pencil drawings appear more visible in a digital format, I accidentally made the text unreadable. The folly! THE HUBRIS! So, I'm gonna be replacing all those old images with newer ones starting tomorrow. Hopefully I get it this time around.

I'm also cooking something brand new up for this month's Patreon. i'm super excited for it, and hopefully, I won't have to adjust the brightness/contrast that much to make it visible to my Patrons :P

Stay tuned for updates on THAT, annnd for ClexaCon!
